MORE OF ED HARDY

Febbraio 27, 2008 · 4 Commenti

An internationally recognized tatto artist, Hardy has developed the fine art potentials of the medium with emphasis on the Asian heritage. “My four years at the San Francisco Art Institute,” says Hardy, “connected me to the great tradition of twentieth-century visual creativity flourishing in California. Best was the privilege of studying with my mentors, Gordon Cook and Joan Brown. Both had a deep sense of craft and art history, and a profound spiritual esthetic, grounded in a pragmatic blue-collar sensibility. Their example continues to encourage me to develop my own vision and make it work in daily life.”

Hardy traveled to Japan in 1973, and revisited the country frequently during the 1980s and 1990s, doing his own work and studying with some of Japan’s finest tattoo masters. “Tattooing has allowed me to be a kind of anthropological sleuth,” says Hardy, “like a police artist bringing a suspect into focus, giving form to the sometimes vague perceptions that people bring to the project of selecting an image to wear on their skin forever.”

Hardy’s work also included painting, drawing, and printmaking. His work has been exhibited nationally, and hangs in the collections of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The contemporary Museum of Honolulu, and the Honolulu Academy of Fine Art. He has written, edited, and published twenty books on alternative art, and in 1999, Hardy was named to the Oakland Cultural Art Commission.
