Corey Miller

Aprile 9, 2008 · 4 Commenti

Corey Miller is a tattoo artist who’s been working his magic for over 23 years and as he puts it he’s “learning new shit everyday”. Corey owns the Six Feet Under Tattoo Parlor in Upland, California.

There is an awesome biography of Corey on his Six Feet Under Tattoo Parlor site where it’s written in great detail how Corey started out tattooing in the early 80’s and moved his way up to where he is now. It’s interesting to find out that Corey had no formal training as a tattoo artist, that he has become the artist he is today by working on tattoos – sometimes falling on his face, but getting back up and getting back at it over and over.

He’s a pretty awe inspiring tattoo artist… and to give you a bit about how he got started in the tattoo industry this is from his site:

“Ask premier tattoo artist Corey Miller how he got into the tattoo business, and he will probably tell you it was “by hanging around the wrong people.” And if you have a sense of humor and you get it, he may tell you the real story.”

On the show LA Ink, Corey always seems to be the one who’s mostly level-headed and you can just tell he’s been doing this for a long time. Kat is very lucky to have him on her side and working at her shop – seriously. He does some pretty spectacular tattoos and you can see more of his work at his Six Feet Under site.

Meatpacking District

Aprile 4, 2008 · 3 Commenti

Not so long ago, the trendiest thing worn in the Meatpacking District was a blood-stained apron. Now, Gansevoort Market (as the district is officially known) is New York’s most fashionable neighborhood, chock full of hip restaurants, exclusive clubs, and paycheck-draining boutiques. Despite the haute onslaught, the neighborhood has managed to retain its blue-collar edge, thanks to the many wholesale meat companies which still operate out of the warehouses between Gansevoort and West 15 Streets. By night, however, the district is transformed, as butchers and meat-cutters disappear, and magazine editors, models, and a stream of Sarah Jessica Parker look-alikes take their pace.

What do you get when you mix famous chefs, a sizzling neighborhood, and a restaurant that can seat hundreds at a time? The answer: a madhouse, or more specifically, Spice Market (pictured). Since it opened in early 2004, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Gray Kunz’s Asian street-food emporium has been constantly packed, despite competition from nearby restaurants like Vento Trattoria and Pastis. Spice Market’s secret (if you can call anything this popular a secret) is its fabulously exotic design, its elaborate pan-Asian menu, and its ability to attract celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Nicole Kidman while leaving room for us non-VIPs as well. Reserve well in advance.
Wooster Projects, an unassuming gallery with a Museum Mile-quality collection, intermittently displays works by such famed artists as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, and David Hockney, among others. Starting in the fall of 2004, the gallery will start showcasing the works of new artists as well, rotating in different exhibitions every few weeks. Later in the year, Wooster will return to its Pop Art roots, displaying unique pieces like Warhol’s portraits of Dolly Parton and mobster John Gotti.
The Studio 54 days are back in a big way at Meatpacking clubs like PM and Cielo (pictured), where beefcake bouncers separate the partiers from the pretenders. If you can get into either of these clubs (a much easier proposition on weeknights), expect fantastic sound systems, $14 drinks, and trendsetters three-deep at the bar. PM has an exotic voodoo feel, while Cielo goes for something a little more space-aged, but both are strictly FPPO: For Pretty People Only.

The Swiss furniture company Vitra treats its 12,000 square foot showroom on Ninth Avenue like a museum, sparsely displaying high-concept furniture in an ultra-modern space by architect Linda Roy. Furniture-philes can easily lose hours drooling over cutting edge pieces from the likes of legendary designers Ray and Charles Eames, Frank Gehry, Philippe Starck, and Isamu Noguchi.
West 14th Street, the Meatpacking District’s main artery, has turned into a Rodeo Drive of sorts, albeit one surrounded by animal carcasses. A stroll down W. 14th St., between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, takes one past the New York outposts of such familiar fashion labels as Stella McCartney, Jeffrey, Alexander McQueen (pictured), Yigal Azrouel, and Carlos Miele. Bring your plastic

The Highline, a rusty, 75-year-old elevated railway that hovers over the Meatpacking District, was a candidate for demolition as recently as 2000. But a group of preservationists called Friends of the Highline have ensured that the 35-foot-high structure will soon see new life as a 1.5-mile long public park. The city is currently considering design proposals, and hopes to finish New York’s newest stretch of open-space in 2006.

Originally the headquarters of the Nabisco corporation (and the birthplace of the Oreo cookie), the block-width Chelsea Market (pictured) now houses the city’s biggest collection of gourmet food retailers. An 800-foot-long concourse burrows through the heart of an old baking factory filled with fountains, sculptures, and a dizzying array of shops. If you’re looking for something sweet, try a brownie at Fat Witch Bakery or a “chocolate chubbie” (something between a cookie and a brownie) at Sarabeth’s Bakery . For more substantial meals, the Cleaver Company serves some delicious mezze platters in a tiny, dressed-up dining room.

Pixie Leaves LA Ink In A Rage (part3)

Marzo 23, 2008 · Lascia un Commento

(

She’s seen me go through all my partyin’ days, boyfriends, a bad divorce, the Miami days, along with all the good stuff too..But working together can definitely put you on a different level with your homies, and I for one, never
thought that what happened recently, would have ever gone down the way it did.I gotta be honest… I’m a good friend, a good co-worker, and sister, but man…I know my weaknesses, and being a boss ain’t as easy as it looks…In one second that an argument between Kim and Pixie took place…I realized I had no control over the situation at hand…none. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like a helpless little kid as much as I did that day.

But if I knew that hiring Pixie from Day One, would evolve into a gnarly fight, I probably wouldn’t have
hired her, since situations like these can cause you to fall out of freindships with people.

But that sh*t DID happen. It was real. And it totally sucked. Watching Pixie walk out the door the
way she did, really changed a lot of things, and still hurts to think about it till this day.

I just wanna warn everyone ahead of time, if you guys watch the show, and are planning on checking it out this week. Because the episode coming up, might bum some of you out.

Since Pixie has left, I haven’t seen her in person. I mean, we’ve been shooting text messages back and forth here and there…like, random, “hellos” and “thinkin’ about yous”. I’m sure she’s been as busy as me, so it’s not like we’re avoiding each other, but I know eventually we’re either gonna run into each other or something, and I’m not sure how it will be…

There’s definitely a lack of closure I think…

Pixie Leaves LA Ink In A Rage (part2)

Marzo 20, 2008 · Lascia un Commento

<a href=”Il mio negozio“>
She’s a great person to talk to and terribly entertaining at the very least to be around, which is what made that most unforgettable day at LA Ink, one of the most challenging days to speak up about an ongoing fact.I’m anticipating a bit of a backlash in regards to the whole thing, but as much as I hate to say it -business is business. I don’t feel a need to go into specific detail about anything because it’s water under the bridge at this point.I haven’t spoken to Pixie, but we’ve texted a bit and I’m not sure our friendship was rooted enough to find some sort of resolve, but I hope she and Kat can patch things up in the future. Aside from that, I hope that Pixie finds a place and career where she can live up to her potential; it’s not managing a tattoo shop, I’ve heard she’s pursuing her make-up which I think holds more promise for her future. As nauseating as the whole situation was, I think that allowing the truth to rear its seemingly ugly head will reveal to all of us the importance of being straight up and honest, which in turn spells out freedom for everyone involved – and nothing is more attractive than that.

Kat Von D:
Seems like this situation has been coming for quite some time…When I first put together my crew for LA Ink, Pixie was actually the first and only person that I knew in my heart I wanted on the team.

I’ve known Pixie for years now, we really do go way back, more so than anyone else on the team, and I like to consider her to be one of my closest friends in all reality.
